Senatore Cappelli – The History of an Ancient Wheat

Learn about the legacy of Senatore Cappelli wheat, an heirloom variety grown in Puglia and Basilicata, rediscovered as a superior cereal.

The Legacy of Senatore Cappelli

Senatore Cappelli is a durum wheat variety that was introduced in the early 20th century. It was named in honor of Senator Raffaele Cappelli, an advocate for agrarian reform that distinguished between hard and soft grains. In the 1930s and 40s, it was widely grown in Puglia and Basilicata, contributing significantly to local agriculture.

Genetic Purity and Benefits

Senatore Cappelli was selected through clonal methods by Nazareno Strampelli in 1915 in Foggia. Unlike modern wheat varieties, it is free from genetic modification and mutagenesis, retaining its natural, unaltered form. Its unique protein composition makes it highly digestible and an excellent choice for those sensitive to gluten-related conditions.

A Wheat with Nutritional Excellence

This ancient wheat variety is known for its high content of amino acids, lipids, vitamins, and minerals. It has a height of approximately 1.80 meters, surpassing the height of common wheat. The Senatore Cappelli wheat provides a flavorful alternative to modern grains and has never undergone genetic modifications that sacrifice taste for high yield.

Organic Cultivation and Rediscovery

Thanks to Bioland, Senatore Cappelli has been preserved and cultivated exclusively using organic methods. The seed, originally obtained in small quantities from the Germplasm in Bari (seed bank), has been rediscovered as a premium cereal. Today, it is cultivated in pristine hillside areas of Lucania, ensuring its organic integrity and high quality.

History
Described as "chosen race" in the 30's - 40's, it was widely used in the lands of Puglia and Basilicata.
It is named in honor of Senator Raffaele Cappelli, a promoter in the early twentieth century agrarian reform that led to the distinction between hard and soft grains.
It's a durum wheat, aristato (that is endowed of awns, the filaments that are noticed in grasses), obtained by clonal selection in Foggia, in 1915 by Nazareno Strampelli. For decades it was the most growing grain widespread, up to the spread of the most varieties most productive.
Intolerance to gluten allergies and ...
Senatore Cappelli is free from any contamination by mutagenesis induced by x and y rays of radioactive cobalt , unlike the variety of hard GMO irradiated wheat, now used in agriculture.
It seems established the hypothesis, that the genetic modification of varieties modern grains , is related to a modification of their protein, and in particular of a fraction, the gliadin , which is a basic protein, from which for peptic-tryptic digestion , you get a substance called fraction III Frazer, to which is due the inflammatory enteropathy and then malabsorption (gluten intolerance and allergies).
Why is the Senatore Cappelli ...
Durum wheat Senatore Cappelli is an ancestor of the modern durum wheat.
Thanks Bioland Company that has reproduced the seed for years, starting at just 200 g , purchased from the Germplasm in Bari (seed bank), has been rediscovered and re-evaluated as a cereal of excellence, through the following features:
Durum Wheat Senatore Cappelli
  • the plant has a height of aprox. 1.80 m (higher than that of common wheat) and contains pi percentages high lipids, amino acids, vitamins and minerals, as well as ischaracteristics of high digestibility;
  • It represents an alternative sweet and exquisite for the preparation of all the products currently used in traditional grain-based;
  • He has never suffered alterations of genetic manipulation techniques of modern agriculture, that sacrifice flavor and traditional content for high performance.

Currently Senatore Cappelli is produced exclusively using organic cultivation in a pristine hillside (gullies) inland Lucan.
